New Version – New VR tools & so many improvements!

With May finally here, we wanted to let you know we’ve been working on some big things behind the scenes that we’d like to share in this post. The latest Open Dev Kit update is fresh out the oven and puts a major spotlight on VR, with controller support improvements and the release of our brand-new 3D VR Demo among a myriad other fixes and across the board improvements! We’re confident this update will give you a ton of new tools and fixes to play and experiment with.

VR Functionality Gets a Major Boost

Virtual reality has taken a huge leap forward in Open Dev Kit. With this update, we’re introducing full support for VR controllers, including advanced input bindings for hand position, rotation, thumbsticks, sliders, and buttons — all fully customizable via the keybinds editor. This gives you a lot of flexibility for building immersive gameplay or motion-based interactions.

On top of that, we’ve also introduced new input and device parameters for keybind events. This allows multiple devices or inputs to share bindings while still behaving differently depending on how they’re triggered. This is a big upgrade that’s particularly useful for more complex VR setups or games supporting both traditional and motion inputs.

And finally, with these awesome VR updates, we’ve also got our new VR demo which you can play right now!

More Tools & Tweaks

Beyond VR, this update brings several other exciting enhancements. A powerful new “Move” function has been added to game objects, allowing you to smoothly reposition objects over time with a specific target location and orientation. This is especially handy for 3D projects and currently supports the Jolt Physics engine.

On the visual side, we’ve introduced a new “Shadows” property for holograms, sprite tracks, and labels. This lets you decide whether they cast shadows from light sources in your scene. You can now very easily prevent those objects from casting shadows for a cleaner or more stylized look.

If you’ve been dabbling with AI integrations, we’ve also updated the OpenAI model support to include o1-mini, o1-pro, o3-mini, and GPT-4.5-preview, along with updates to the demo for smoother testing. We’ve also implemented the Responses API allowing for far more streamlined interactions using less data, plus the structured outputs API allowing for formatted content.

And finally, we’ve squashed a ton of bugs. The changelog for this update is absolutely massive, touching nearly every part of the engine. From subtle workflow improvements to deeper engine-level fixes, Open Dev Kit continues to become faster, more stable, and more reliable with every release.
